Chapter fifteen

Lello

Playing cards with Red, Blue and Jade is nice, but I have a mate waiting for me upstairs and I have left him alone for far too long.

I throw down my cards after Red wins, yet again.

“I’m off to bed,” I say cheerfully. I want to boast, but not to sleep, but Blue and Jade are sensitive about such things, so I don’t.

As it is, everyone is giving me a worried look. I give them a bright, happy smile in return. It’s lovely that they are protective of me and I know Carter looks scary, but once they get to know him, they will see how wonderful he is and they will stop being concerned.

I get to my feet. “Goodnight everyone.”

They all return my farewell, and it makes me smile. It’s like getting little hugs to my soul. I have people in my life who love me and it is the most wonderful thing in the world.

As I’m climbing the stairs, I hear whispering voices again. They sound closer than ever. I shake my head to clear it. Brodie said seeing and hearing things that aren’t there is a trauma response. Something about the body being on high alert for more danger and misinterpreting things. It’s fine. It’s not scary and I can ignore it.

I push open my bedroom door and the sight of Carter sitting in my bed makes me feel all giddy. He is reading a book and is wearing glasses. I’ve never seen him in glasses before, he looks amazing. I might get him to keep them on, but take everything else off.

He looks up at me and smiles. I grin back at him before jumping onto the bed and straddling his lap. I snatch the book from his hands and chuck it to the floor. Then I lean in and kiss him. He kisses me back in a distracted way and then his hands rest on my chest and he pushes me away.

I glare down at him. “What’s wrong?” I can feel my blood turning into ice as dread squeezes my lungs. Why doesn’t he want me?

He gazes up at me with a penetrating look in his hazel eyes, as if he is trying to see into my very soul.

“What if you don’t really want this, Lello? What if it’s just the mate bond making you think you do?”

I huff in annoyance. I don’t like this at all. And he didn’t even call me Baby. It’s making my tummy feel funny, and not in a good way.

“I thought we’d been through all of this?” I say as I cross my arms over my chest.

What on earth has set him off? I thought we were good. Everything was going great. He was starting to like me and I was pleasing him. My frantic mind is scrambling to figure out what I have done wrong, but I can’t find the reason. I don’t understand.

Carter gives me a troubled look. “I’m worried about you.”

“I’m fine,” I insist. “I like you, I like being mated.
